About Adam Tharpe

I work in a variety of mediums and subject matters. I enjoy all the beauty the wonderful things the world has to offer life fruit, wine & cheese or colorful landscape. I try to depict he beauty of what I am drawn to and interpret it my artwork. I try not to copy exactly what I see, I turn to artistic license and incorporate my own personal poetry and rhythm. My aim is to lift the spirit of the viewer and try to offer an alternative in thought or at times provoke thought.

I have worked in watercolor, Pastel, Pen & Ink Wash, Charcoal, Graphite, Acrylic and as of late Oil. I enjoy painting landscapes, portraits of people, still lives and floral arrangements. There are two ways I paint a portraits: In person, I have the client sit for me live and I set up a backdrop and lighting or I work from photographs. I usually ask the client to carefully select a photo with light and shadows or I will take the photo myself. This way I can ensure that able to capture all the features detailing how they respond to the light resulting in a more realistic depiction of the subject.

In landscape I was trained to lead the viewer into and around, up and out of the painting which results in an experience or interaction with the work. I use certain components or rule in landscape painting to make the painting more pleasing to the eye such as the golden ratio or rule of thirds. With these rules I place the center of interest or subject matter at certain positions in the painting and use more subtile elements to support it. All of this takes careful planning and arranging until it feels or looks right. This is done by creating thumb nail sketches in pencil to moving around those components and how I want them to respond to the light source.

I do enjoy painting and photography. With photography you are taught to really see, to see that light is the key component to form. I am still learning about the wonderful world of color and how color and light affects everything in life.

One of my instructors one told me that Art is communication and it is a life long learning process which never ends. I can attest that this is true in my experience. Art has also taught me that you have to be committed and not to be fearful, because it is all those hours of hard work, study, trial and error that help in the gradual steps of achievement or personal success.
